Live Art in Worship.

I know it's been a while, but a lot has been happening...

My art has been showcased in the exclusive Black Rock boutique Pearl Rock here in Melbourne. Also the photo collage below is the result of a pioneering event to include live art during worship at Bayside church. This took place on Vision Night; where the theme for the year Refresh was launched. To that end I have been asked to lead the visual art side of worship for Bayside Church, which is such an exciting undertaking.

Here working along side fellow artist, Tonia Burgess, we had only twenty minutes to create meaningful art and, our ultimate aim; meaningful worship from the heart. It was a bit of a speed game, but having worked to a timer during the week I was confident having done the preparation God would do the rest through us.
This is me in action. To get to this took a week of planning a colour palette and developing painting techniques that would work with a 20 minute time limit.
Laying a Ground
Every artist I know hates a gaping white canvas including me. So under the time restraint, with hundreds of people looking on during the worship service it was a no brainer to apply a ground prior to the worship service.
The two images below represent the before; that is the ground of silver leaf foiling that I love to work on and the after, the finished 20 minute timed painting done in the studio in the week leading up to service.
What seemed like a barrier at first was in fact a gateway to a technique that I now adore, namely the timed making of a piece. Putting that restriction of time on the work allows a freedom of pure expression and connection to the core of worship. There is no time to be nervous or second guess yourself. That's not to say no preparation is involved, one can't just throw paint at a canvas. As I said a lot of time during the week was given over to working, praying and thinking within the theme of refresh.
